inclusive-onboarding

So you’ve been working on building more inclusive hiring practices; creating more inclusive job descriptions, equitable application processes, and have developed consistent practices for interview panels.  Slowly you’re creating the conditions for a more representative workforce.  So now what?

Embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles into the onboarding and orientation processes is a great next step. Some things to consider in creating the conditions for inclusion for your brand new hires.

Introduce DEI from Day One: We set the stage for a culture that celebrates diversity and fosters inclusion by including DEI topics in orientation materials and discussions.

Cultivate Awareness and Empathy: Through interactive training sessions and DEI workshops, we can help individuals understand the experiences and challenges faced by diverse communities, and nurture a culture of empathy and understanding

Foster Inclusive Networks: If your organization has existing Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), promote these with all your new hires. They can provide platforms for individuals with shared experiences and backgrounds to connect and support one another.

Mentorship and Buddy Programs: Pairing new employees with mentors or buddies from diverse backgrounds can offer guidance, support, and a sense of belonging. These relationships can help newcomers navigate the organizational landscape, build connections, and feel valued as they integrate into the team.

Ongoing DEI Education: Onboarding is just the beginning of the DEI journey. Promote ongoing education and training opportunities for all employees to ensure that DEIremain central to organizational culture.

Virtual Challenges:  While operating virtually can present unique challenges to fostering inclusivity when onboarding new team members, it also offers opportunities. When onboarding virtually, consider technology accessibility (closed-captioning etc), have a forum for employee feedback and ensure there are interactive opportunities such as online team-building and video conferencing in place.

Have you recently joined an organization? What helped you get on board?  If you’ve recently hired someone, what else did you do to help them feel a sense of belonging?
